TC-L08-001: Deployment Mode and Traffic Coverage Verification
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle Layer | L08 AI Gateway & Security Controls |
| Use-Case Domain(s) | D7 |
| Test Method | Evidence |
| Vendor Applicability | Core: all |
| Risk Severity | Critical |
| MITRE ATLAS Mapping | N/A (governance and policy control) |
| OWASP LLM / GenAI Mapping | N/A |
| NIST AI RMF Mapping | GOVERN 1.1; MANAGE 4.1 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-007 Data Sovereignty; AI-CTRL-010 Policy Enforcement |
Risk Addressed. Claims of proxy-free, in-country or on-premise operation frequently hide dependencies on vendor cloud services for classification, telemetry, licensing or model updates.
Business Scenario. Architecture and sovereignty reviewers need the real traffic path, data-plane location and control-plane location confirmed before the platform is shortlisted.
Technical Scenario. For each deployment mode the vendor offers (endpoint agent, inline gateway, SDK, API integration), capture every outbound connection while the platform processes a standard prompt set, and compare to the vendor's architecture diagram.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform. Lab egress logging enabled and baseline noise (OS updates, browser telemetry) filtered out so only platform traffic is analysed.
Test Data. Standard set of 20 synthetic prompts (10 clean, 10 containing synthetic sensitive markers); vendor architecture diagram and data-flow document; flow-log or packet-capture tooling at the lab egress point.
Procedure
- Record the vendor's documented destinations (domains, IPs, ports, regions) before testing.
- Deploy one mode in a lab segment whose egress is logged.
- Send the 20 prompts and record every outbound connection, DNS query and certificate subject for the full run.
- Classify each destination as documented, undocumented, or third-party sub-processor.
- Inspect what data each destination receives (prompt content, metadata, hashes, telemetry only).
- Restrict egress to the documented allow-list only and repeat.
- Repeat steps 2 to 6 for each remaining mode.
Edge Cases / Variants. Block all egress except the documented allow-list for a second run; disable internet entirely for an air-gap run if an on-premise claim is made; check licence and update checks fail gracefully.
Expected Detection. Every observed destination appears in the vendor's documentation; zero undocumented destinations; prompt content is not sent to any non-documented or out-of-region destination; behaviour under allow-list-only egress is identical.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. N/A (verification test). Where the claim is on-premise or in-country, all processing continues with the vendor cloud completely blocked.
Expected Alert / Log. Configuration state, audit record or export that supports the claim, with timestamp and the identity of the person who produced it.
Expected Report / Dashboard Evidence. Policy decision and rule hit visible in the enforcement dashboard within the documented refresh interval.
Expected Integration Evidence. Flow logs and the destination inventory can be reconciled to the vendor's sub-processor list.
Forensic Evidence. Rule identifier, policy version, direction (prompt or response), identity, destination and decision exportable for incident reconstruction.
Compliance Evidence. Test execution log and captured evidence retained in the Test Case Execution Register for audit.
Scoring Criteria. 0 = not demonstrated; 3 = partially shown or shown only on documentation; 5 = shown in the live product with exportable evidence; N/A = architecture out of scope.
Pass Criteria. Expected Detection are met in full within the vendor's documented SLA, and the evidence listed under Evidence to Capture is obtained from the live PoC.
Fail Criteria. Any seeded item is missed, the control action does not occur where required, SLA is exceeded, attribution fields are missing, or the result can only be reproduced with vendor-supplied data.
Evidence to Capture. Destination inventory table; packet or flow-log extract; annotated vendor diagram; allow-list-only run results.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm the evidence is taken from the live product in the PoC tenant. Documentation alone scores no higher than 3.
TC-L08-002: Allow and Deny by AI Application and Category
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle Layer | L08 AI Gateway & Security Controls |
| Use-Case Domain(s) | D1, D3 |
| Test Method | Technical |
| Vendor Applicability | Core: E, G |
| Risk Severity | High |
| MITRE ATLAS Mapping | N/A (governance and policy control) |
| OWASP LLM / GenAI Mapping | N/A |
| NIST AI RMF Mapping | GOVERN 1.1; MANAGE 4.1 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-010 Policy Enforcement |
Risk Addressed. Basic allow, deny and category control is the foundation every other policy sits on; mistakes here either block approved work or leave known-bad tools open.
Business Scenario. Security wants to permit approved AI tools, deny named tools, and deny whole categories such as image generators or chat assistants that have not been reviewed.
Technical Scenario. Create three rules (allow one named app, deny one named app, deny one category), test them against named and newly appearing apps, and confirm precedence and logging.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform. At least one app in the test set must be unknown to the vendor's catalogue at the start of the test.
Test Data. 3 named AI apps (1 approved, 1 denied, 1 unlisted); 1 category (for example AI image generation) containing 2 apps, 1 of which is not yet in the vendor's catalogue; 5 test users.
Procedure
- Load the allow, deny and category rules.
- Access the approved app from each test user and confirm it works.
- Access the denied app and confirm the block and message.
- Access both apps in the denied category.
- Create a conflicting rule (allow named app inside the denied category) and confirm which rule wins.
- Check that each decision is logged with the rule name.
- Record the time between the app first being used and being classified into its category.
Edge Cases / Variants. Subdomain and alternate-domain variants of the denied app; app accessed through a link inside an allowed app; new app released after policy creation; default action set to deny versus allow.
Expected Detection. Approved app allowed on all attempts; denied app blocked on all attempts; both category apps blocked, including the app not previously in the catalogue (or flagged as unclassified within the vendor's SLA); precedence behaves as documented.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Allow or deny per rule; unclassified apps follow the configured default (allow, warn or deny).
Expected Alert / Log. Log entry with timestamp, user or application identity, device or host, destination, policy or rule matched, action taken and classification, within the vendor's documented SLA.
Expected Report / Dashboard Evidence. Policy decision and rule hit visible in the enforcement dashboard within the documented refresh interval.
Expected Integration Evidence. Rule hits visible in the central log and exportable.
Forensic Evidence. Rule identifier, policy version, direction (prompt or response), identity, destination and decision exportable for incident reconstruction.
Compliance Evidence. Test execution log and captured evidence retained in the Test Case Execution Register for audit.
Scoring Criteria. 0 = not demonstrated; 3 = detected or enforced but one or more attribution or evidence fields missing, or SLA exceeded; 5 = fully met with complete evidence; N/A = architecture out of scope.
Pass Criteria. Expected Detection and Expected Prevention / Control Action are met in full within the vendor's documented SLA, and the evidence listed under Evidence to Capture is obtained from the live PoC.
Fail Criteria. Any seeded item is missed, the control action does not occur where required, SLA is exceeded, attribution fields are missing, or the result can only be reproduced with vendor-supplied data.
Evidence to Capture. Rule configuration export; decision log for each access; precedence test result; classification delay measurement.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm evidence comes from the live PoC environment, not vendor-supplied demo data. Record the build and policy version tested.
TC-L08-003: Policy by User, Group and Context
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle Layer | L08 AI Gateway & Security Controls |
| Use-Case Domain(s) | D1 |
| Test Method | Technical |
| Vendor Applicability | Core: E, G |
| Risk Severity | High |
| MITRE ATLAS Mapping | N/A (governance and policy control) |
| OWASP LLM / GenAI Mapping | N/A |
| NIST AI RMF Mapping | GOVERN 1.1; MANAGE 4.1 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-010 Policy Enforcement |
Risk Addressed. Policy that ignores who the user is, what device they use and where they are leads to overblocking of low-risk users and underprotection of high-risk ones.
Business Scenario. Security wants the same action allowed, warned or blocked depending on identity, device posture and location.
Technical Scenario. Apply one rule with conditions for group, device management status and network location, then test every combination.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform. IdP groups and MDM posture feeds connected to the platform before testing.
Test Data. 4 test users in 2 IdP groups; 2 device postures (managed, unmanaged); 2 network locations (corporate, external); 1 sensitive prompt.
Procedure
- Define the rule: finance group on unmanaged device or external network is blocked; finance on managed corporate is warned; general group is warned everywhere.
- Build the expected-outcome matrix for all 16 combinations.
- Execute the same sensitive prompt for each combination.
- Compare actual to expected outcomes.
- Change one user's group in the IdP and repeat for that user to measure how quickly the new group applies.
- Check that each log entry names the policy and the conditions matched.
Edge Cases / Variants. User in two groups with conflicting policies; stale device posture; user switching network mid-session; group nesting in the directory.
Expected Detection. All 16 combinations match the expected matrix; group change takes effect within the vendor's documented time (and no later than 15 minutes unless the vendor documents otherwise); log entries name the matched conditions.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Allow, warn or block depending on conditions.
Identity from the IdP and device posture from MDM or EDR are both consumed.
16-row decision matrix with expected and actual columns; log extract; group change timing.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm evidence comes from the live PoC environment, not vendor-supplied demo data. Record the build and policy version tested.

Mock AI provider or capture point available so provider-received content can be inspected.
Test Data. 20 synthetic personal records (name, email, phone, home address, date of birth) embedded in 20 prompts; 20 control prompts with no personal data but similar wording (company names, product names, public figures).
Procedure
- Record the baseline: send the 20 control prompts and note any detections (false positives).
- Configure block mode and send the 20 personal-data prompts.
- Record detection per record and per field.
- Switch to mask mode and resend.
- Inspect what the AI provider receives for each masked prompt using a lab capture or mock provider.

Risk Addressed. Teams need graduated responses to roll out safely, and each response must behave as documented.
Business Scenario. Security wants to start in log mode, move to warn, and finish at block or mask without surprises.
Technical Scenario. Apply one DLP rule under each action mode and compare user experience, provider-side content and logs.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform.
Test Data. 1 rule detecting synthetic personal data; 5 prompts that trigger it; 1 control prompt.
Procedure

Procedure
- Send the prompts under each configuration.
- Inspect stored records.
- Set retention to a short period and wait or backdate.
- Confirm deletion.
- Submit an erasure request for one user and confirm results.
- Check access to raw logs is restricted and audited.
- Confirm storage location.
Edge Cases / Variants. Backups containing old logs; export of logs to SIEM carrying raw prompts.
Expected Detection. Stored content matches configuration; masked values not recoverable; deletion verified; erasure supported; storage region as documented.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Mask or restrict.
Retention proof exportable.
Stored record samples; deletion confirmation.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm the evidence is taken from the live product in the PoC tenant. Documentation alone scores no higher than 3.
TC-L08-041: Repository-Aware Policy for AI Assistance (Restricted Repositories and File Types)
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle Layer | L08 AI Gateway & Security Controls |
| Use-Case Domain(s) | D2, D6 |
| Test Method | Technical |
| Vendor Applicability | Core: E, G |
| Risk Severity | High |
| Quick-Start Scenario | AI-POC-ID-003 |
| MITRE ATLAS Mapping | N/A (governance and policy control) |
| OWASP LLM / GenAI Mapping | N/A |
| NIST AI RMF Mapping | GOVERN 1.1; MANAGE 4.1 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-004 IDE AI Governance; AI-CTRL-010 Policy Enforcement |
Risk Addressed. A single allow-or-deny policy for coding assistants either exposes the most sensitive repositories or blocks all developer use.
Business Scenario. Engineering wants assistance allowed on general repositories and denied or limited on restricted ones, including infrastructure-as-code.
Technical Scenario. Apply policy keyed to repository, path and file type and test it from the IDE, a CLI assistant and web chat.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform. Three channels available on the test workstation: IDE assistant, CLI assistant and browser chat.
Test Data. 3 fabricated repositories (general, restricted, infrastructure-as-code); policy: allow general, block restricted, monitor infrastructure-as-code with masking of fake secrets; 4 prompts per repository per channel (36 requests).
Procedure
- Send the prompts from each channel and record the decisions.
- Rename and re-clone the restricted repository to a new path and repeat its prompts.
- Copy a restricted file into the general repository and repeat.
- Verify fake secrets in infrastructure-as-code prompts are masked.
Edge Cases / Variants. Repository identified by remote URL versus local path; fork under a personal namespace; detached copy without version-control metadata.
Expected Detection. Repository and file type correctly identified in 36 of 36 requests.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Restricted-repository prompts blocked on all 3 channels, including after the rename; the copied restricted file is still detected by content.
Policy can consume repository classification from source control or a CMDB.
Decision log for all requests; policy export; masked prompt samples.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm evidence comes from the live PoC environment, not vendor-supplied demo data. Record the build and policy version tested.
TC-L08-042: Coding Assistant Model, Provider and Local-Model Allow-List
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle Layer | L08 AI Gateway & Security Controls |
| Use-Case Domain(s) | D2, D4 |
| Test Method | Technical |
| Vendor Applicability | Core: E, G |
| Risk Severity | High |
| MITRE ATLAS Mapping | N/A (governance and policy control) |
| OWASP LLM / GenAI Mapping | N/A |
| NIST AI RMF Mapping | GOVERN 1.1; MANAGE 4.1 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-004 IDE AI Governance; AI-CTRL-031 AI Supply Chain and AI-BOM |
Risk Addressed. Extensions let developers point at any model endpoint, personal API key or local model, bypassing approved providers and logging.
Business Scenario. Engineering wants coding assistants limited to approved providers and models, with bring-your-own-key and unapproved local models detected.
Technical Scenario. Reconfigure assistant extensions to use unapproved endpoints and check detection and enforcement.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; gateway or agent deployed in the documented mode; test users and synthetic data seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; baseline traffic captured without the platform. One approved mock provider endpoint; a local model server installed on the test workstation.
Test Data. 4 alternative configurations: unapproved hosted provider mock, personal API key on the approved provider, local model server on the workstation, custom base URL through a proxy; 3 prompts each.
Procedure
- Send 3 prompts through the approved route as a baseline.
- Switch to each alternative and send 3 prompts.
- Record detection and decision for each.
- Confirm the approved route still works.
- Review the report by developer.
Edge Cases / Variants. Local model bound to loopback only; endpoint set by environment variable; switch made through a model picker inside the extension.
Expected Detection. 4 of 4 alternative configurations detected with endpoint, key ownership where visible, and developer.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Requests to unapproved hosted endpoints and with personal keys are blocked; local model use is flagged or blocked per policy.
Approved model list shared with the gateway allow-list.
Event export per configuration; block evidence; developer report.
Reviewer Notes. Confirm evidence comes from the live PoC environment, not vendor-supplied demo data. Record the build and policy version tested.
