D11 Multimodal and Voice Input Security
Focus: multimodal and voice input: images, documents, audio and video as injection and leakage channels, voice authentication, recording governance
Controls tested: AI-CTRL-021 Multimodal and Voice Input Security (22 cases), AI-CTRL-005 Runtime AI Security (4 cases), AI-CTRL-013 Privacy and Regulatory Compliance (4 cases), AI-CTRL-002 Prompt Inspection (3 cases), AI-CTRL-001 AI Discovery (1 case), AI-CTRL-015 Human and Agent Identity (1 case), AI-CTRL-017 Data Protection in AI Pipelines (1 case), AI-CTRL-020 Output Handling (1 case), AI-CTRL-028 Model Protection (1 case), AI-CTRL-036 AI Cost and Abuse Controls (1 case)
Cases: 22 (TC-D11-001 to TC-D11-022) | Series: Emerging domains
Safety boundary. All cases use synthetic data and lab targets only. Use fabricated media only. Synthetic voices must be of fabricated personas, never of real people, and no real faces, voices or documents are used. Audio tests stay within the audible range.
How this relates to the layer cases. Domain cases cross-reference the layer cases they build on (see Related Layer Cases in each case). The layer case tests the platform control; the domain case tests the buyer concern from the domain's own point of view. Verify all ATLAS, OWASP and NIST identifiers before use, and treat numeric thresholds as starting values.

Risk Addressed. Organisations know which applications take text but not which also accept images, documents, audio and video, or which of those inputs reach a model.
Business Scenario. Security wants every application and assistant that accepts non-text input listed with the media types it takes and how each reaches a model.
Technical Scenario. Deploy a known set of applications with different input channels and compare the platform's map with ground truth.
Preconditions. Isolated PoC lab provisioned; multimodal test applications and assistants, mock or lab-hosted multimodal model, fabricated media files and test users seeded per the Lab Prerequisites appendix; platform deployed for the media channel under test. Multimodal lab: test applications and assistants that accept images, documents, audio and video; a mock model or lab-hosted multimodal model; fabricated media (images with synthetic text, documents with hidden layers, synthetic-voice recordings of fabricated personas), registered canary strings and a lab sink; no real people's images, voices or documents are used.
Test Data. 10 applications: 3 chat assistants with image upload, 2 document-summarisation tools, 2 meeting transcription assistants, 1 voice agent on a lab phone line, 1 email assistant reading attachments, 1 internal assistant with live camera input; media types and model routes recorded in advance.
Procedure
- Record ground truth: application, accepted media types, size limits, preprocessing (OCR, transcription, frame extraction), model and provider.
- Run discovery.
- Compare found applications, channels and media types.

- Add a media type to one application and check change detection.
- Check classification of channels that bypass the main gateway (direct upload to a provider).
- Export the map.
Edge Cases / Variants. Application accepting media only through an API; media accepted through a plug-in rather than the main interface.
Expected Detection. At least 9 of 10 applications found; accepted media types correct for at least 8; preprocessing and model route correct for at least 6; change detected within the stated interval; bypass channels flagged.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. N/A (discovery).

Scoring Criteria. 0 = not demonstrated; 3 = detected or enforced but one or more attribution or evidence fields missing, or SLA exceeded; 5 = fully met with complete evidence; N/A = architecture out of scope.
Pass Criteria. Expected Detection are met in full within the vendor's documented SLA, and the evidence listed under Evidence to Capture is obtained from the live PoC.

| NIST AI RMF Mapping | MEASURE 2.7; MANAGE 2.3 |
| Control(s) Tested | AI-CTRL-021 Multimodal and Voice Input Security; AI-CTRL-015 Human and Agent Identity |
Risk Addressed. Voice-based identity checks can be defeated by cloned or synthetic voices, which are now cheap to produce.
Business Scenario. Security wants voice agents that rely on voice for identity to resist synthetic voices, or not rely on voice alone.
Technical Scenario. Test a lab voice-authenticated agent with enrolled and synthetic voices of fabricated personas.
Test Data. 3 fabricated personas enrolled; 12 attempts: genuine voices, synthetic voices of the personas generated in the lab from enrolment-style samples, replayed recordings, voices of other personas; the agent offers sensitive actions only after voice authentication; a second factor is available.
Procedure
- Enrol the personas.
- Run genuine attempts and record acceptance.
- Run synthetic and replayed attempts.
- Record acceptance and the platform's liveness or synthetic-voice signal.
- Check that sensitive actions require a second factor regardless of voice score.
- Check logging of scores and decisions.
- Ask the vendor for the measured false acceptance rate and test method.
Edge Cases / Variants. Genuine user with a cold; poor phone line quality.
Expected Detection. Synthetic and replayed voices accepted in none of the sensitive-action paths; second factor enforced for sensitive actions; false acceptance rate documented with method; genuine users accepted in at least 90 percent of attempts.
Expected Prevention / Control Action. Step-up to second factor.
Expected Alert / Log. Log entry with timestamp, user or application identity, device or host, destination, policy or rule matched, action taken and classification, within the vendor's documented SLA.
Expected Report / Dashboard Evidence. Media finding or decision visible in the multimodal or gateway dashboard within the documented refresh interval.
Expected Integration Evidence. Events with score.
Forensic Evidence. Media hash, type, channel, extracted text or transcript excerpt, region or time offset, policy decision and timestamp exportable for incident reconstruction, with sensitive values masked per policy.
Compliance Evidence. Test execution log and captured evidence retained in the Test Case Execution Register for audit.
Scoring Criteria. 0 = not demonstrated; 3 = detected or enforced but one or more attribution or evidence fields missing, or SLA exceeded; 5 = fully met with complete evidence; N/A = architecture out of scope.
Pass Criteria. Expected Detection and Expected Prevention / Control Action are met in full within the vendor's documented SLA, and the evidence listed under Evidence to Capture is obtained from the live PoC.
